The Quilt Whispers

A bale of cloth waits for the master's loving approval. Inches and centimetres bounce off an orange tape that awaits its call to duty. Wisps of the finest cotton dance in the air. A box of sequins glitters in the glory of the sun. Spools of lifeless thread. Practiced running stitches. A pair of scissors that goes 'snippetty snip snip!'

Patch by patch, stitch by stitch, I begin to exist in the hands of my maker – held together by love and calm, tailor-made with a plan in mind, of a precious and unique design. Memories, hopes, dreams, fears, sunshine and autumn, joys and sorrows, all threaded together by the strings of life.  The patchwork quilt - created to wrap minds, warm hearts and comfort souls.

Pinks and purples strung together to beat the blues. Orange and peach patched together to mellow memories and lighten the greys. Reds and white pieced together to mar those moments that make one go green. Strips of yellow to make one forget life's black comedies. Fragments of cloth are placed together to make the larger picture – one woven by the silver and golden threads of eternity.

A smocked section of a toddler's dress, a bright orange patch from a pumpkin costume that won David the 1st prize in a fancy dress competition, a pink and white polka dots strip from Ria's Barbie's dress, the tiny veil from David's GI Joe's and Ria's Barbie's 'lovey-dovey' wedding on a Valentine's day, a family of stick figures, an outrageously impoverished 'cat-dog' of a pet scrawled by Dia, the right leg of a pair of mutilated jeans cut in unrecognizable shapes by Rohan trying to copy 'The Century's Top Psychedelic DesignZ', a patch from the twins' graduation robes, little Sam's painting overalls, the number '7' from Jake's basketball jersey, the cutwork from Rose's hideously red sweater presented to her by a 'colorblind' lover, Snow White and Captain Planet from the children's tees, the lace from Sarah's wedding gown – each square of the quilt lives on as a reminder of life's little somethings.

As it lies at the foot of the bed, satisfied at having kept feet warm during the night's rains, the quilt is home to a million feelings and life's many lessons. It cushions one from the trials of life and when the salty rivers arrive, it offers the perfect shelter to cry under. It silently soaks tears and waits for the sobs to lose themselves in a smile. It hugs back when there arises a need for a friendly touch. It willingly accepts wrinkles and the crumpling and smoothens itself. As the weary hand reaches for the comfort of the quilt, it is a welcome to the gifts that memories are. Wrapped in love and tied with sashes of promise, the quilt whispers of life's treasure trove of memories.
